AB-SA-FREAKIN-LUTE-LY!!!!...on all sides of the ball - Face-offs, groundballs, motion offense, team defense, personnel substitution and unbelievable play in goal (ok, so a couple of those shots are gonna leave a mark...can a lacrosse ball double as a meat tenderizer when it makes contact with a forearm and is launched up and over a 10 ' fence behind the goal?)...in the four year history of the team, last night's game was the best and most satisfying...Silver Sachems 10 - South Shore Womps 9.

It was satisfying because it showed the resiliency of our team to come back from 3-4 and 6-8 deficits without panicking. We were especially pleased with the way EVERYONE played their role and allowed the right personnel onto the field in key game situations. Admittedly, the bench shortened a bit through most of the game but, there will be many more games this season when we will have some breathing room to extend the bench with playing time for all.

The offense seemed more relaxed in distributing the ball with wider formations and more off ball motion...throughout the game there were many more quality shot opportunities than we've had and believe last night's style of play is really something to build on. Key goals from Tom #12, Hoop #19, George #9, Brian #14, Kevin #16 (from the side of a milk carton into the box score), Josh #22 and Alex #11 showed how getting everyone involved in our newish style of motion, cuts, 'iso-s' and feeds works...the combination of speed from the wings from John #6, Carl #29, and Pete #38's heart and hustle on the FOs to a new-found cohesion on transition led to a solid effort...once we realized everything isn't a fast break, we can move the rock around, and how effective an invert offense can be was really the key.

Another great game of team defense led by poles' Greg #3, Mike #10, Kevin #13 and Rich #7 along with D-middies Craig #50 and Johnny T #5 and good defensive transitions at LSM from Scott #20 and the return from the sea of "Squid-ward" Mark #21. And, how about that 'stellar' play from our keeper, John D #15? Unflappable, John kept a very good team out of the net through his physical, "Tim Thomas-esque" display of ball stopping.

Clearly a win we can build on and a demonstration how we can run with anyone in the league when we understand our roles, work together, support one another and 'bring it' as a team...NEXT UP?: Easton Misfits on WEDNESDAY, July 6th at Oliver Ames High School in Easton...Game #2 was a GREAT WIN, we hope you have an enjoyable 4th and are ready to 'bring it' next week.

Game #1 Summary: Olde Pats 4 - Sachems 3 (0-1)

Great start to the season! We came together and dominated last night's game for the final three quarters with solid team defense and goalie play, poise and patience possessing the ball, good scoring chances and an overall team effort with everyone playing their role. It was great right up until the point where the game was over and we had one less goal than the other team. Silver Sachems 3 - Sudbury Olde Patriots 4.

The game proved we can run with anyone in this league and we will definitely get our share of wins. In most ONELL games, holding a team to four goals is almost assures a win but, the Olde Pats had a very stingy defense with good goalie play. The keys for our future success will be to play in transition (both offense to defense and defense to offense) by getting the right personnel on and off the field.

On scoring chances it's more a matter of 'everything isn't always a fast break' and we need the patience to "pull it out," "turn from pressure" and restart the sequence. The highlights of the game included: the rock solid play of our goalie, John Tatusko, who yet again showed the importance of versatility; the effectiveness of Tom O'Rourke inverting from "X"; Juice's usual hustle on and off the field; and, the combination of Brian Crowley, Pete Davis and Luke Bauingo on the faceoffs. Scorers included: Steve Hooper, Tom O'Rourke and Juice.

Next up: South Shore Womps in Hingham on Tuesday, June 28th. The Womps historically are a fairly strong team and have been in existence for several years. In their just their second year as an O40 they have a lot of experience playing together...being a home game they will have a strong turnout of players and we will need to take our game to the next logical level.

2011 Season Gets Underway

The South Coast Silver Sachems kick-off their 2011 schedule on June 21st. This year's team playing in its 4th season features most of the returning players from 2010 with some great additions at all positions. In addition to returning All-Stars Brian Crowley, Steve Hooper, Greg Anderson, Mark "Juice" Giusti and Larry Simpson, the team has added some key additions. New to the squad are Dave Briere, John Norberg, Luke Baiungo, Carl Faust and Kevin Young. The team boasted a 3-5 record yet finished strong by winning three of their last four games; losing two games by one goal; and another in overtime. Expectations are high for this squad with a goal of making the playoffs. The team plays its home games at "Silver Sachems Stadium" located on the campus of Bridgewater Raynham HS (415 Center Street, Bridgewater MA). We ran with a 7-1, 3rd place, playoff-bound team who was a 2009 ONELL finalist and kept it close to the very end...Buzzards Bay Salty Old Buzzards (7-1) - 6, South Coast Silver Sachems (3-5) - 4.

If only we had another eight games...By far, August 3rd's game was the best total team effort of the season. The Buzzards came into the game looking ahead to next week's playoff game and scored the first two goals but, got a HUGE wake up in the 1st quarter on a much improved Sachem team from the last time they played us. We got on the board on an unassisted goal by Juice #23 to make the score 1-2. The Sachems out hustled them winning the GBs 11-9, made more shots 13-9 and matched them at the faceoff X 2-2. The defense kept their relentless play and back-up goal tender, John Tatusko #5, made 11 saves. The Buzzards goalie, Rob McMillan, came up HUGE himself by making numerous short range stops. The second quarter was much like the first with the Buzzards scoring three more goals but, the Sachems came back with two of their own with two goals from Attackman Tom O'Rourke, one on an assist from George Finn #9 and another unassisted goal on a heads up play by intercepting a pass and putting it into an empty net. The 2nd quarter ended at a very respectable 3-5.

In the 3rd the defense kept up their solid play allowing just one goal in the entire 2nd half with another waved off on a crease violation. The team effort continued throughout the second half but, the Buzzards picked it up a bit winning the GB war 22-15 and had more possessions getting 13 to our 8 shots. While the defense continued to play tight and tough, they got a bit sloppy on clears making an uncharacteristic 10 of 19 attempts. The offense kept up their pace and scored on an unassisted goal from Finn #9 to make it 4-6 going into the final quarter. The 4th quarter saw multiple opportunities by both teams with the pace and style of the game that were very evenly matched but, the Buzzards prevailed in the end.

It was a fitting way to end the regular season by finishing on a high note by keeping the Buzzards scoreless in the final frame. I dare say, we have become the best 3 win team in the league and believe we have set the foundation for a very promising 2011 season. The season saw the addition of many new faces and notched the first three victories in team history (ssshhhh, let's keep that one quiet). Despite an 0-3 start we finished with a very respectable 3-2 finish. And, we came just one goal (the OT loss) and just one win away (losses of 7-8, 3-13, 8-12, and 4-6) from making the playoffs. Next year, our goal should, and will, be nothing less than five wins and a berth into the playoffs.

Week #7 vs Easton Misfits 13-2 W (3-4)

Where do you start giving a summary on last night's game? In a game that featured the return of several 2009 Sachems who formed the Misfits, it was clear that it's not as easy as some people think to put together a team of good players, who have the right chemistry and can play competitively in this league. GREAT GAME SACHEMS!!! South Coast Silver Sachems - 13, Easton Misfits - 2.

In a game that was punctuated by nearly unbelievable statistics (more later), it was great to see solid performances from everyone who stepped onto the field. The game plan of "never let them feel they are in the game" faltered a bit early with a sluggish start in the 1st quarter with just two goals from George Finn #9 (3G, 1A) assisted by Juice #23 (2G, 1A) and Defensive Midfielder Scott Nilson #20 assisted by Todd Geraughty #6 on a total 13 shots. But, the 2nd quarter saw our scoring punch get on track with 12 shots that produced goals from Steve Hooper #19 assisted by Finn #9, two unassisted tallies from Justin Feingold #44 (3G), and a goal each by Juice #23, Dan Connors #30 and Brian Crowley #14 (1G, 1A). The only blemish was a Misfit "cheapie" goal that was technically a pass that ricocheted off three people before trickling into our net. Half time lead, 6-1.

The 2nd half began similar to the first with our offense continue to work the ball to open shots (15 in the 3rd) resulting in three more goals from Feingold #44 (second of three on the night), and unassisted goals from Juice #23 (his second) and Crowley #14 (his second). It was, "1-2-3 FINISH" in the 4th quarter that saw four more Sachems' goals from Tom Bosworth #99, Feingold #44 again and two more from Finn #9. The overall stats? an amazingly 58-25 of groundballs, 43-13 shots, 14 of 16 clears, and 13-3 at the face-off X. The defense played solid against a soft attack and, the game even saw a great clear by Tom Collard #48 and a 60 yard rush by "Larry-why-the-heck-didn't-you-shoot Simpson" #4. All in all, a great performance that we will need to build upon next week and can build on for next season.

Some might say (and did) we piled it on but, I would argue it was some sniping comments that said during the game made it difficult not to bury them. Keep in mind, the 2009 Sachems lost by scores of 20-0, 14-3, 12-1, 17-2, 14-1, 16-1, 16-1 ("Sudbury Seven") and "too many to count to nothing." So, for us to balance the scoring and never demonstrate the type of fist pumping, chest thumping, and "nice defense girls" comments like we got last year showed the true class that has become the 2010 Sachems. Speaking of class, I wanted to publicly thank John Decesere for an awesome season (he will be out of town next week) in goal with many "stellar" performances that gave us the chance to win and stay in all of our games, THANK YOU JOHN...you're a class act.

2010 ONELL O40 All-Star Game Led by Silver Sachem Representatives

The 2010 Olde New England All-Star Game played on Saturday, July 24th included four Silver Sachem representatives, Attackman Mark "Juice" Giusti, Midfielders Brian Crowley and Steve Hooper (served as an alternate to Alex Cheng who did not participate due to an earlier commitment) and Over 40 League Ambassador, Larry Simpson. Defenseman Greg Anderson who had been voted in was unable to attend due to an illness.

The game was played in historic Harvard Stadium and featured All-Stars from all 19 teams in the ONELL O40 league. Silver Sachems representatives "Juice" and Steve Hooper both scored goals with Brian Crowley winning nearly all of his faceoffs. Ambassador Larry Simpson was the Honorary South team captain and played at both midfield and defense. The game ended in an 8-4 loss to the North but, was a great game for all involved.

Week #5 Suspended Game vs Gansett Grays 8-9 OT L (2-4)

Last night's conclusion of the Week #5 suspended game was the longest 12 days, four quarters with one overtime period and was quite easily the most exciting game in team history...hold your heads high, Silver Sachems 8 - Gansett Grays 9 (OT).

The game was marked by a suspension due to an injury to one of our players with the score at 3-5 at half time. The first half played on July 13th was a tightly played contest with Sachem scores from Tom O'Rourke #12, Todd Geraughty #6 and Juice #23 with goalie John Decesere #15 chipping in an assist on a 60 yard pass. The game was suspended at half time by mutual consent following a serious injury to Josh Fenton. Under nearly identical weather conditions of light rain, the game was resumed last night with the Grays extending their lead to 3-6 less than a minute into the start of the second half.

The Sachems then went on an impressive four goal run with tallies by Brian Crowley #14, Mark Gough #8 and two from Steve Hooper #19 on assists by Juice #23 who finished the game with a four point effort. The Grays came back with two goals of their own making it 8-7 until Steve Hooper scored his third goal of the game with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation. After a five minute break, the 10 minute, "Sudden Victory" overtime period began with goalie John Decesere turning away two point blank shots.

However, the game ended on a 70 yard rush from the Grays' tall defenseman #55 who fired the game winner from just inside the restraining box. Our team showed amazing resilency throughout the game by coming back from 3-5 and 3-6. We should be incredibly proud of the fact that, while the record will show we lost the game, we came back from a two-goal deficit to win last night's second half 5-4. Because of the Sunday restart and earlier injuries we played with an offense missing Josh Fenton #22, George Finn #9, Justin Feingold #44 and Pete Davis #38 as well as playing without key defensive starters Greg Anderson #3, Erik Winton #27 and LSM Joe Towers #37. Despite the loss of players we dominated the ground ball war 29-20, outshot them 23-22 and won the faceoff battle 11-9. The game will likely go down as one of the best efforts of the season and the most exciting game in franchise history. We hope to build on the effort as we close out the season with two remaining home games against teams (Misfits and Salty Old Buzzards) who are comprised of a number of former Sachems.

2010 Olde New England Lacrosse League O-40 All-Star Silver Sachems Representatives Announced

The following selections were announced before last night's game from team voting over the weekend to represent the South Coast Silver Sachems in the 2010 ONELL All-Star Game being held this Saturday, July 24th at historic Harvard Stadium starting at 5:00 PM before the Boston Cannons game at 7:00.

Please join us in congratulating your selections….

ATTACK
With 73% of the Votes at his position…Mark “Juice” Giusti #23

DEFENSE
With 70% of the Votes at his position…Greg Anderson #3

MIDFIELD (Two Selections)
Receiving 33% of the total votes at the midfield position…Brian Crowley #14. (NOTE: Our scorer had the final 10-4 but, the Rusty Bones believed it to be 9-4...we are trying to confirm the official result with the referees).

The pre-game strategy was to score early and never let the Bones feel as if they were in the game. The offense answered with six first quarter scores on 21 shots from Brian Crowley #14 (2), Juice #23 (+ an assist), George Finn #9 (2) and Dan Connors #30. The defense also responded by shutting the Bones offense down and limiting them to just one goal on 13 shots. The half time lead of 8-1 was achieved with second quarter goals from Mark Gough #8 and another from Crowley to complete his 'hat trick.'

The game was dictated by the Sachems' dominance at the face off X winning 12 of 16 and the defense having a very efficient 80% of their clears. Goalie John Decesere #15 had yet another "stellar" performance in the net turning away 19 shots. In the second half the offense concentrated on ball movement, getting everyone involved and less about scoring with Captain "Juice" marshalling the troops from the sideline after chipping in a tally in the 3rd. With the score/game seeming to shift momentum toward the Bones, Gough #8 finished the fourth with his second goal on the night for a final, 10-4.

Overall, Juice #23 extended his team leading scoring total of 16 points (9G, 7A) with Brian Crowley #14 the next nearest at 8 points (8G) followed by Steve Hooper #19 with 4 points.

The statistics do not include the Week #5 result from the July 13th suspended game with the Gansett Grays. The game was suspended at half time due to an injury sustained by one of our players. The game is being scheduled and will resume with the score 3-5.

Week #4 vs Manchester Elder Tribesman 7-4 W (1-3)

For the first time this season and in team history we got into the win column. The first victory of what we hope to many more this season. South Coast Silver Sachems 7 - Manchester Elder Tribesman - 4.

Tuesday's game was the first of a league experiment to have teams with similar records from the previous season play one another despite the geography and meet on a neutral site. The field in Chelsea was a warm, humid evening with a 8:45 start. Out of the gate the Sachems came out shooting by scoring three first quarter goals from Josh Fenton #22, Juice #23 (3 points total) and Brian Crowley #14 (2). And, we continued our ground ball domination winning 10 of 14 (32 of 64 overall) and 4 to 1 (8 of 15 overall) at the faceoff circle in the first quarter. The second quarter saw a 0-0 tie with a half time lead of 3-1. After a spirited half time discussion about team work and finishing strong, the Elder Tribesman won many phases of the game in the 3rd quarter getting the score to 5-4 despite goals from Juice #23 and Steve Hooper #19 - so much for pep talks. However, the Sachems finished stronger in the fourth quarter getting two additional goals from Brian Crowley #14 and Justin Feingold #44 to seal our first win 7-4. In all it was a well played team game with everyone contributing to good team defense, smart, solid ball movement and another stellar performance by our keeper, John Decesere #15. The game featured the debut of Scott Nilson #20 who played some great D-Midfield and a new player, Pete Davis #38 at Attack and Man Up. While this win was too long in coming it was a great example of what we can do when we play as a team and have everyone contribute. Next up, a rematch with the Gansett Grays.

Week #3 vs South Shore Stragglers 13-3 L (0-3)

Well, we've reached a turning point in our young season after facing a very challenging opponent in the Stragglers. They are a very skilled team and clearly one of the best (if not the best) we will face this season. The first half was well played and we got the Stragglers to open their eyes that we can be competitive with a half time score of 6-2 but, they showed no let up in the second half outscoring us 7-1 and never allowed us to get back in the game.

As Juice said, "don't get down on yourselves based on the end result of tonight's (Tuesday's) game - we know we're better than that." I echo his sentiments in that we have made tremendous progress and have shown the league and ourselves we can be competitive when we can work together. The Stragglers did an outstanding job in the offensive zone finding open men on the crease and making the 3rd and 4th pass. John Decesere and the Defense did a very credible job 6 v 6 facing direct shots but, it became impractical to stop the shots they took at point blank range. Last year, they scored 17 on 56 shots so last night's 13 on 41 should not have been a surprise and in some ways an improvement. We continued to do well with GBs (27 to 31) but, the deficiency of Defensive clears (14 of 24) and missed opportunities on possessions hurt our ability to give the Offense the chance to get quality shots (18). While we were below our season average of 6.5 goals/game we did get goals from Josh Fenton #21, Brian Crowley #14 and Steve Hooper #19 with Juice #23 getting an assist to bring his team leading point total to 9.

Its time to have a short memory and move on to what could be a four game run in games we should be very competitive - READ: games we should win. We turn our attention to two teams who were 1-7 last year in the Elder Tribesman and Rusty Bones, a rematch against the Grays at Home and another first year team with the Misfits at Home...turn the page and let's get ready to become the team we all believe we can be.

O40 Results from Week #2

Sudbury Olde Patriots - 5
Seacoast Sack - 8

Granite State Thunder
NH Rusty Bones Postponed

Groton Ancient Warriors - 13
Manchester Elder Tribesmen - 4

Cape Ann Gaspin' Greenheads - 5
Billerica Fakawee - 8

Woburn Bald Eagles - 7
Atlantic/Team CroART - 9

MetroLacrosse Blue Stale Doughnuts - 2
Winchester Silver Foxes - 8

South Shore Womps - 14
Misfits - 3

South Shore Stragglers - 5
Buzzards Bay Salty Old Buzzards - 8

South Coast Silver Sachems - 8
'Gansett Grays - 12

Week #2 vs Gansett Grays 12-8 L (0-2)

We improved from Week #1 and had it 7-7 leading into the 4th Quarter but, didn't have a very strong final frame...Silver Sachems 8 (0-2) - Gansett Grays 12.

Despite missing some key players (Goalie John Decesere #15-Business; Attackman George Finn #9-Injury; Defender Joe Towers #37-Wife Ill; and Attackman Mark Gough #8) we had a great 'step-in goal' performance from John Tatusko #5. The huddle chant of "1-2-3 Ground Balls" seems to have worked by winning 62.5% last night. The Offense did a great job distributing the ball with goals by Justin Feingold #44 (2), Todd Geraughty #6 (2), Brian Crowley #14 (1), Steve Hooper #19 (1) and a super human effort by Juice #23 who tallied two goals and three assists when he wasn't on all fours on the sidelines puking his guts out - great effort, "Juice"...please don't tell us that's where you got the name. Juice opened a wide margin in the season scoring with eight points on the young season. We owned the 3rd quarter, reeling off four goals, 9-6 GBs, winning four FOs, and completing all three clears but, in the end the defense, who improved their clear percentage to 71% (64% for the season), faced too many shots (8) and man-down situations in the 4th to keep their #11 and #1 off the board giving the Grays their first victory in just their second game as a franchise. However, it was great effort by all and something to build on for a tough opponent next week.

Week #1 - vs South Shore Womps 7-6 L

In a game that was tied 3-3 at half we allowed two soft goals early in the third but, made a great comeback scoring 3 goals in the final quarter while not allowing another Womp goal. In the brief, "0-fer everything" history of the team it was among the best played game with a good balance of the solid defense and patient and effective offense. The game stats are attached and feature: 20 to 21 ground balls; 18-23 shots; and 12 saves by John Decesere #15. Erik Winton's #27 gutsy save didn't make the box score but, should be noted. We got some great scoring from Juice #23 with 3 goals and single tallies by Josh Fenton #22, Todd Geraughty #6, and Brian Crowley #30. With just a few more timely shots and we could have reached our first victory of the season and club history. All three phases of the game (Defense, Transition and Offense) played well as a unit and show signs of great things to come. He sent it after I asked for input from a few of you about off season moves we may make to improve next season.

At 0-9 we'll take any advice we can get from this article or from any of you…please take the time to read this through and offer any comments (humorous or otherwise) on your thoughts of improvement in the offseason......

The Ringer
Some teams wait until the playoffs to unveil this option. Others go with it right from the opening faceoff.

Either way, without a ringer, your team is done. The challenge for managers is convincing a good player to suit up for a bad side. This can be accomplished a number of ways, including promises of goal-scoring glory and awe-inspired teammates. Most effective, however, is free hockey (lacrosse). It's simple math, really. Everyone else pays an extra $50 and everyone else gets a shot at the Division-7 (ONELL) title.

The Young Guy
At first glance, he can easily be mistaken for a ringer, since the young guy still wears the shorts and socks of his junior or college team. But it's time for the next phase of life now, and that means an office job. The young guy stays in shape for the first half of the year. Sadly, an
increasingly sedentary existence catches up by Christmas (July). Ten to 20 pounds later, he's just another player, huffing and puffing with the rest. Welcome aboard, kid.

The Old Guy
Forget the 50-and-over league; that's not for him, even though his gloves reach up to his armpits and he still uses a wood stick. To be fair, the old guy can be an effective player, especially if he's a wily old guy -- a hook (slash) here and a chop (moving pick) there, because that's how they did it when professional athletes were real men. "Eddie Shore (Jim Brown) -- now there was a hockey (lacrosse) player! Lost an ear against the Maroons. Sewed it back on himself. Never missed a shift."

The Tardy Goalie
Hey, thanks for showing up. Only five minutes gone in the first. Not like you play a crucial position or anything. Take your time.

The Beginner
Required only for cheap laughs. On the one hand, you have to admire the beginner. It takes a lot of courage to take up hockey (lacrosse) in adulthood. On the other, learn to take a pass, man. It's right on (in) your stick. How does that knock you over? And, now you're offside.

The Complete Psycho
Also good for a few giggles . . . from afar. The complete psycho is capable of anything: running the goalie, challenging an entire bench, a tomahawk chop (stick check) -- all in the repertoire. Do not feed the complete psycho. He doesn't want to be fed. He wants to hunt.

The Naked Guy
Bane of the dressing room (parking lot). Most players have the courtesy to stretch their hamstrings while sporting, at the very least, a bit of underwear. Not the naked guy. He'll carry on full conversations, too, and you'll maintain eye contact like your life depended on it.

The Guy with the New Girlfriend
A good way to lower everyone else's fees is to load up on a few of these. The guy with the new girlfriend will show up to five games, tops, so it's not like you'll lose ice time (shifts) by putting him on the roster. That said, beware that the guy with the new girlfriend might very well turn into the guy with the wife, at which point he'll never miss another game.

I think we should all Congratulate the Winchester Silver Foxes and Atlantic Sportswear Remnants on winning the ONELL Championships…by implementing these suggestions the South Coast Silver Sachems on well on their way to vie for the title in 2009. Yea right, but hope does spring eternal.

Fall Lacrosse in Franklin - Sundays - 8:00 - 9:30, September 7th - November 16th

The fall lacrosse season starts on Sunday September 7th and run until November 16th. No one quit, no one got frustrated and we hope you enjoyed the experience. We can't thank you enough for the hard work, commitment and sacrifice each of you demonstrated throughout the season.

We'd like to acknowledge and thank the following:

Our Player/Coaches: Jeff Feroce, Mark Notz and Mark Brady...thanks for stepping up when asked and for your leadership on and off the field...and special thanks to Jeff for coming out despite his injuries.

Highest Levels of Commitment: Players who took played and took part in all nine games include Tom Collard (attended every game, every practice and played every position including goal and faceoff specialist); Greg Anderson, Jim Pavlik, Mark Sheffield and Larry Simpson.

All-Star Representation: With a season having more lowlights than highlights on the scoreboard, the ONELL All-Star Game is one of best moments of the season seeing Nat Saltonstall, Andrew McIntire and Dave Robson be among the best players on the field...thanks for your awesome play...they didn't acknowledge one, but Nat, you were the game MVP!!!

Getting Between the Pipes: We were honored this year by not just one goalie this year but three outstanding goaltenders. The Goalie is by far the most important position on the field for the skill required, the leadership needed and the guile to stand in against a barrage of shots...thanks to Mark 'Brady' and end of season recruits Trey Crisco and Rob MacMillan.

Offensive Leaders: Yes, we did score more goals than two other teams in the league led by our scoring leader, Mark Notz (8), as well as Nat (5) and Dave (4) with Shaun Stanton (2), and Charlie Van Voorhis (2) with single tallies by Adam Deery, Kirk Franklin, Ted Mocarski, Will Saltonstall and our lone D-pole score, Greg Walker.

"Mudders in the Middle": Ok, we played all but one game on turf but, special thanks and acknowledgment for the boys in the middle who ran their guts out and mudded it out, Mark S, Chris Donley, Chris Baril, Eddie Lee, Greg Murphy, and Tim Reid.

"Most Improved Player" from the Beginning to the End: While not an official designation, it needs to acknowledge the impressive improvement from where he began to where he ended up - Charlie Van Voorhis...you played incredibly down the stretch...more comical moments? seeing the Stragglers #23 trying to cover Charlie when he didn't come up to Charlie's #19...keep up the great work!!!

"The Final Line of Defense": Present company excepted we were fortunate to have a great crew on Defense led by All-Star Alternate Greg A, Dave Barker and Kent Hallamore...it was a pleasure sliding and watching each others' back with you.

"The Master of Stats": We all owe Ben Collard a debt of gratitude for his commitment and 100% attendance in keeping track of the good and the not so good...THANKS BEN!!!

Injured Reserve: The down side of an O40 team is that we're Over 40 and the body doesn't mend or bend like it used to. Unfortunately, we had too many injuries (off season conditioning? work those hammies) that kept a number of guys on the sideline including Steve Keohane, 'Brady', 'Coach Jeff', Greg M, Kirk, Will, Ted and 'Barks'...guys, hope you heal soon!!!

Our Record?: In the final analysis we were undefeated in the camaraderie we developed, the 'family friendly' environment we created at home games and the fun we had playing "the greatest game ever invented"...we were honored to have you on the squad and hope to see in you in 2009.

Game Summary - Stragglers August 19th

The thing we took away from last night's game was there was "no quit" in the Silver Sachems. Despite being out played and out scored, everyone gave it their all and "left it out on the field" to the very end. As evidence, the game of ground balls was nearly dead even at 24-25. However, we were on the short end of too many of the, 'games within the games' -- shots (14-40) and faceoffs (3-20). Despite missing a number of players due to vacation and injury, we are extremely proud of how well everyone came together to put in a great effort in the second half keeping the Stragglers to just six goals and only two if 4th. But, unfortunately, sportsmanship wasn't as important of our opponent: Stragglers 16 - Silver Sachems 2.

Silver Sachems in the News.....

The following is a link to a story published in this morning's sports section of the STANDARD TIMES we think you will enjoy. That said, we are proud of well you played in the First Quarter staying close to the 07 Champions (1-2). And, we kept it somewhat close going into the Half (1-5). Overall we equaled them on Ground Balls (22-21), stayed close on shots (23-31) and dead even on face-offs (8-8). We were fortunate to have yet another stellar performance in goal - thanks again Trey for coming up big.

Unfortunately, we had an uncharacteristic number of penalties (4 - 3 in the second half) that hurt us. Little surprised the refs didn't keep the whistle in their pocket given the score.

Heads up guys, that was heck of a squad we played. And, game after game we are improving dramatically. We have come a long way this season and hope everyone is pleased with how we have progressed as individuals and as a team. But, in the end the result was the same with a differant score. Winchester 12 - Sachems 2.

We'd like to once again acknowledge the commitment and dedication of some folks who have made our season so special despite the results...thanks to Jeff and Mark for their leadership as player/coaches...Nat for scoring our first goal and coming up so HUGE all season long - an inspiration to us all...Tom for your loyalty, perfect attendance and doing everything asked of you...Ben for giving of your time this summer helping on the sidelines and keeping the book...and to everyone who has supported the team, pushed themselves to better players and awesome teammates...THANK YOU!!! Let's finish strong against the Stragglers and lay the groundwork for 2009.

Game Summary - Sudbury August 5th

WOW!!! What a great game and what an impressive improvement in our most competitive game to date! An "L" in the standings but, a "W" in all categories other than the scoreboard...Sudbury 7 - Sachems 6.

GAME SUMMARY
The game was marked by a HUGE step in the right direction by keeping the score close throughout the contest (2-2 in the 1st; 3-3 in the 2nd; 5-5 in the 3rd; and 6-5 for most of the 4th). The strategy of settling ball on offense and spreading the field led to a greater number of quality shots and an impressively balanced scoring attack (check your inbox for past game summaries as that is the first time we can say that - 2 for Nat and one each from first time scorers - Kirk, Charlie, Will and yes our first long pole goal, Greg Walker).

And, yet another dominant performance at the faceoff circle for Nat and his supporting crew winning 11 of 16. Special thanks to Rob MacMillan in goal - an outstanding performance making some great saves and pushing the ball up field on breaks very effectively - THANKS for coming out. All in all, the game was our best demonstration of working together as a team, having solid defense by mids and D-poles, doing a great job slowing the pace on offense, and getting some insightful encouragement from the sidelines - Jeff, we missed your box management and hope you will be out there next week with a stick in your hand. The bad news is we ended up on the wrong end of 16-1 game.

On ground balls we are holding our own. Faceoffs we continue to dominate (64% last night, 50%+ YTD). But, despite the opportunities with possession we continue to have difficulties clearing the ball, making the transition to offense and slowing down the pace to set picks, cuts, feeds and get quality shots. We managed only 14 shots which is just two thirds of our season average.

We can't say enough about how much we appreciate everyone's effort to 'do their best' and we have come quite a ways playing much better as a team. However, the Stragglers were a very good opponent and a second year team who play together indoors throughout the winter. An idea I've spoken with their organizers about. The thought would be to have an ONELL Winter league or at least a South Shore/South Coast winter league....more later.

The Missing Goal Scorer

We found the missing goal scorer....when the weekly game stats were distributed, our scorebook keeeper did not capture who scored the initial...alas, someone came forward. type='text'>Game Summary: Bald Eagles July 1st

Congratulations to ALL for a well played game last night......the entire coaching staff concurred that, while we were on the short side of the scoreboard, we played like a team.....keep up the great work.

The tempo set early of being more aggressive on defense combined with a more methodical pace on offense showed tremendous improvement. We clearly stayed competitive throughout the first three quarters. It appears we lost some of the intensity in the 4th with the number of shots dropping off and an alarming number of unsuccessful clears which hurt us.
